It is summer term and we want to be outside so we are only going to make weekly entries in the blog!!

 Monday

Ha!Ha! Ha!  we are all on holiday and Mrs Coutts is having to work in Orkney.

Tuesday

Netball for the Upper Primary girls in Brae. The rest of us went to Baltasound as usual.

Wednesday

The excitement is starting to build as the girls prepare for Paris. Trying to have a very quiet day. Worked in the garden.

Thursday

The big day. P.7 went to Baltasound for the first of their transition days. Back down to have a final look at the weather in Paris. Wee ones seem to be relishing the fact they wil have the school to themselves next week.

 Friday

P.4 at Baltasound first thing. Very quiet in the class with only P.1-3. Not for long 7 folk from Orkney arrived for the weekend.

Another busy week

Monday       Waste audit – We are up to speed with waste management, recycling and  reusing are second nature to us

Tuesday      Probationery teacher from the largest primary school in Shetland came to see how things are done in Uyeasound and went away with lots of ideas and hopes for her teaching career

Wednesday     The older girls went to play hockey in Brae. This involves travelling on two ferries either way and so we did not see them all day.

Thursday       Passport  Yes. it was the biggest cheer of the week when we heard that Shona’s passport had arrived so she is off to Paris next week!   new-foal.JPG

We watched this foal being helped into the world in the field next to the school. Almost every pupil has Shetland ponies so there’s plenty of  equine vocabulary in use – piebald, skewbald, chestnut, filly, colt, horse, mare

Firday   Interschool sports – We were very proud of the three older girls who played an important part in the netball, against the team from our nearest island, Yell. They came back with medals and we have some good action photos taken at the game.   Mrs Coutts is off to work in Orkney. We looked up the Stromness primary school and felt a message on their blog.

Hands up for Horticulture

After all the hard work last term, we just had to fork over the soil for the raised beds. Actually, hands are much more effective and fun than forks! The pupils’ metre squares cut out of the turf did not need much adjustment to make the beds fit.

Anna bakes bread on Monday. After working outside, the pupils didn’t take long to make it disappear today .

Greenhouse Go!

Posted by: rainbowlightschool | April 27, 2007 | No Comment |

Yes, after all the measuring and hammering, the girls finished the first set of shelving for the greenhouse.  While this was going on, seeds were being planted and Michael helped Joe with a birthday bake. We rounded of the day with everyone tucking into chocolate chrunchies.

Tango Thursday

Posted by: rainbowlightschool | April 26, 2007 | No Comment |

Four of our pupils are off to Baltasound today to join Chroma in a tango experience!!

Gordon Williamson, another one of the candidates visitted today. Out parents have invited all the candidates to visit the school. It seems education will be an important issue in this election.

The can crusher gave up the ghost today so we will need to order another one.

It is a wonderful day. Lambing has started around us so this will be good for the lambs.

Mrs C is busy preparing a presentation for Monday. She is giving a talk at the SETT out door Learning festival at the Royal Highland Show ground in Edinburgh on Monday.

Fund raising

Posted by: rainbowlightschool | April 26, 2007 | No Comment |

The stock pile of crushed aluminium cans is waiting to be cashed in. The money raised will go towards the Paris trip. Thank you to the hall and the gallley shed for their contributions. All contributions are welcome. No red tins as thety are made of steel.

The Voar Redd Up is also underway and the staff have tackled our patch because of the mess. Our grant from the clean up will also go towards Paris.

Work has started on the inside of the greenhouse.

Today (Wednesday) the girls were to go to a hockey tournament in Brae but it was rained off. It May take place later in the term.

Tuesday – Tickets

Posted by: rainbowlightschool | April 26, 2007 | No Comment |

Well the Paris tickets arrived and all seems fine. The accommodation has also come through. They even sent a picture of the person who will meet them and give them the key. We thought this was a really good idea.

Josie Simpson one of the candidates for the local elections also visitted the school in the last week. He seemed very impressed with our efforts. We hope all the candidates visit us over the next few weeks.

The final term

Posted by: rainbowlightschool | April 19, 2007 | No Comment |

A nice quiet start to the term……… not likely!!

We have finished the greenhouse which is looking great. We even managed to reclaim some mosaic slabs from a nearby pottery to have as the path to the door. The workman has been really busy all holidays and has it ready for planting.

Pupils have been heavily involved in the construction process.

As we look forward we realise we are going to be hard pushed to fit everything in.

So watch this space……………………..

Last 3 days of term

Posted by: rainbowlightschool | April 19, 2007 | No Comment |

Our session started with Glass way back in August and it looks as if it will end with glass in June.

The Last 3 days of term have been spent in the company of Fiona Foley ,our artist in residence. Pupils made their own glass panels which have been fired in a kiln. We then moved on to the cutting of the glass for the main panels for Valsgarth.

Most of this work was carried out in the galley shed which has a large work bench and concrete floor. The glass could be left out for the whole three days. So we need to thank the Up Helly Aa committee.
