We have just sent the following by email to the Shetland Times our local newspaper.

UYEASOUND TEACHERS GET PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION

On Wednesday 15th of November Barbara Priest and Kate Coutts joined colleagues from all over Scotland to be presented with Professional Recognition from the General Teaching Council of Scotland. This is a new professional award.Kate and Barbara along with Derek Ross are the first Shetland teachers to gain this accreditation.

The presentation ceremony took place in Glasgow at Learning and Teaching Scotland’s headquarters.Representatives from LTS,GTC,Tapestry and Harvard University took part in the ceremony.Kate,Barbara and Derek successfully completed an online course of study with Harvard University on “Teaching for Understanding”.

Instead of going to Glasgow Kate and Barbara along with the pupils of Uyeasound headed further North to the Unst Response Team’s base at Hagdale. There they used the video conferencing facility to link live with the award ceremony.

Kate Coutts Headteacher said afterwards,”It was important for our pupils to see their teachers being recognised for completing a course on line and to take part in a video conference. This is the way forward and will probably be a major part of their life long learning experience.”

What an experience! To sit in Unst and be part of a national event. The folk in Glasgow commented on how well the bairns behaved.

Another first for Uyeasound

No Lerwick tomorrow due to the forecast.

My warmest congratulations to Barbara and Kate. They certainly deserve all the recognition they can get for the wonderful learning environment that they have created for children. They challenge children to strive for personal excellence in all they do.

Congratulations to you both.

Thank you for that glowing endorsement.
Barbara

Congratulations to you all. I think it is great to be able to show your young people that learning does not stop just because you are not at school - and using technology is not exclusive to “younger” people either!

Yes, we are all “young” at heart in Uyeasound School!

A big well done for all the well-deserved recognition you’ve received this week! It’s a pleasure to be working with you all in such a great school.
